Welcome to the Neighborhood: Harriet McKeenin and Movement for Everyone

Welcome to our latest Meet Your Neighbor feature, where we spotlight the local business owners, community members, and friendly faces that make our neighborhood unique. This week, we are excited to introduce Harriet McKeenin, a new Bernal Heights resident who recently relocated her studio, Movement for Everyone, directly to the Mission Bernal corridor.

Located at 3180 Mission Street (between Cesar Chavez and Valencia, right near neighborhood spots like El Rio), Harriet’s studio offers a fresh, movement-focused approach designed to build strength, mobility, and lifelong physical health.

What is Gyrotonic Movement?

Harriet specializes in both Gyrotonic and Gyrokinesis methodologies. If you have ever walked past the studio and wondered about the unique apparatus inside, you are looking at specialized equipment like Pulley Towers and handle units.

Unlike traditional weightlifting gear, this weight-stack-and-handle system uses fluid, continuous resistance to guide the body through three-dimensional motion. The practice focuses on:

  • Spinal Articulation: Targeted sitting posture techniques, side bending, and rotational movements.
  • Enhanced Circulation & Mechanics: Opening up shoulder joint mechanics and expanding range of motion.
  • Neuromotor Retraining: Re-educating patterns of movement to improve body confidence and control.

An Approach for Every Body

While Gyrotonic practice was originally developed in the 1980s with dancers in mind, Harriet’s studio is structured for a wide spectrum of community members:

  • Athletes & Dancers: High-level performers, runners, and triathletes seeking to optimize flexibility and performance.
  • Injury Recovery & Chronic Pain: Anyone managing lower back tightness, neck strain from long hours at a desk, or specific conditions like frozen shoulder. Harriet regularly collaborates with physical therapists to continue client care after formal insurance coverage ends.
  • Fitness Beginners: Anyone looking for a gentle, low-impact alternative to high-intensity gym environments.

Offerings & How to Get Started

Movement for Everyone officially opened its doors at the new Mission Street location on June 1. Harriet offers several ways to get involved:

  • One-on-One Sessions: Customized private instruction built around individual goals, generally recommended one to three times weekly.
  • Small Group Tower Classes: Interactive small group training using the studio’s specialized machinery.
  • Gyrokinesis: Mat- and chair-based movement sequences that deliver similar mobility benefits without complex equipment.

Stop by to say hello next time you are walking down Mission Street, or step inside to see the studio space in action!
