Gentle path to deepest healing: Dr. Debbie of Puzzle Acupuncture
When Dr. Debbie opened Puzzle Acupuncture on Valencia Street near Cesar Chavez this past October, she brought a unique blend of traditional Chinese medicine and modern healthcare collaboration that remains relatively rare in the United States.
A Journey Between Two Worlds
Originally from Taiwan, Dr. Debbie pursued her passion for Traditional Chinese Medicine by studying in Beijing, where she earned her PhD in TCM Diagnostics, and later gained additional experience in California. Her career has taken a truly international path, beginning as an acupuncturist aboard Norwegian Cruise Line ships in the Mediterranean Sea, where she treated tourists from around the world, including members of royal families. This diverse clinical experience eventually led her to one of Beijing’s top-ranked private hospitals that collaborates with the Mayo Clinic. There, she treated international patients while working alongside various medical departments, developing an integrative approach that combines the wisdom of traditional Chinese medicine with modern Western medical insights. This unique blend of traditional training, cross-cultural patient care, and collaborative practice has shaped her healthcare philosophy and positioned her to bridge Eastern and Western medical traditions with expertise and cultural sensitivity.
“At our hospital, we work very collaboratively with other departments, neurologists, OB/GYN, pediatrics, PT, psychiatrics… We worked as a team to solve problems.” Debbie explains. “That’s different from many acupuncturists in the US who typically work independently.”
After relocating to San Francisco in September with her partner, Debbie settled in the lower SOMA neighborhood and quickly established her practice, bringing her collaborative approach to the Bay Area.
A Gentle, Modern Approach
What sets Puzzle Acupuncture apart is Debbie’s technique. She specializes in gentle cheek acupuncture, using specific points to address health issues throughout the body—a modern needle technique developed about 30 years ago that’s less common in American practice.
“My approach is very gentle and effective,” she notes. “These acupoints can treat various conditions while being comfortable for patients. Most of my patients will have an immediate pain release after the 1st treatment.”
60% of her cases are pain-related. She has worked on complex neurological disorders, neuropathy, stroke rehabilitation, Bell’s palsy, post-surgical nerve damage, cancer-related pain,
But her toolkit extends beyond needles for more complex conditions like women’s health issues, allergies, insomnia, emotional issues, and chronic digestive symptoms.
Because of her gentle care, she also treats children aged 6 months and older. Young kids with digestive problems, picky eaters, easily catching colds ( low immunity), torticollis, developmental delay, or precocious puberty. Mostly using herbs or therapeutic pediatric massages.
Debbie incorporates Chinese herbs, which can provide longer-lasting effects than weekly acupuncture sessions alone.
Recognizing that traditional herbal tea preparation can be challenging for American patients and that the taste can be quite strong, Debbie offers alternatives, including capsules and powders, to make treatment more accessible.
Building Community Through Healthcare
Debbie’s vision extends beyond her treatment room. She’s actively building a healthcare community in the Bay Area through her YouTube channel, ” Puzzle Exchange,” where she hosts podcasts featuring diverse practitioners, including physical therapists, chiropractors, and psychologists.
Her long-term plans reflect this collaborative spirit: expanding Puzzle Acupuncture into a multi-practitioner clinic that incorporates both Western and Eastern approaches, potentially adding mental health services alongside physical treatments.
