Catch of the Day: A Q&A with Ramzy of Seafood Station
Recently, we sat down with Ramzy of Seafood Station to discuss his restaurant and his role as a merchant in Bernal.
Seafood Station from the Beginning
Can you tell us a little about the history of Seafood Station and how it came to be located in Bernal Heights?
It started with a love for seafood boils, and I couldn’t find a good spot in San Francisco. So, my team and I decided to create our twist on the food we love the most. Seafood Station was born, and we chose Bernal Heights as our location because it’s a part of my family history. I grew up right here next door and now work next door to my father’s shop, which has been here since the 80s.

What sets your seafood apart from other seafood restaurants in the area?
The main difference between other seafood restaurants in the area and us is our small restaurant, where we can focus on providing consistency, taking time, and putting effort into the food. However, the real difference lies in the ambiance and the welcoming feeling of being part of our family. We treat our customers like family.
Menu and Favorite Dishes
Can you walk us through your menu and highlight some of your most popular dishes?
We offer a variety of popular dishes, including mussels, chorizo, and lime, a unique recipe created by our chef at San Marco, Guatemala. It’s made with heavy cream, water, Mexican-style chorizo, lime juice, and chicken broth. Another popular dish is the San Francisco staple, cioppino, a seafood soup made with clams, mussels, shrimp, and cod, served with two slices of garlic bread. It’s been a staple of San Francisco since the 1800s. My personal favorite is the cod tacos. They are light, flaky, and fresh.
How do you source your seafood and ensure its quality?
We source our seafood from local markets and trusted fishermen. We ensure its quality by thoroughly inspecting it and preparing it fresh daily.

Can you share memorable customer experiences or stories from your time running Seafood Station?
Every day, we encounter people from diverse regions of the world, but we always share memorable experiences with some of them. Of course, every person has a different experience every time they come. Still, everybody feels amazed and appreciated by the restaurant.
Growing Up on Cortland
What do you like about being a Cortland business?
Being in Cortland is everything to me. It’s a part of my family history. We chose Cortland because my family started living here in the 1980s, near me at Pay Little Market.
What do you like to do when you’re not at the restaurant?
When I’m not at the restaurant, I like to check out other seafood restaurants and see what they do to stay competitive.
What advice do you have for anyone interested in launching a new business?
My advice is never to give up.
What exciting things can we expect from Seafood Station?
We’re working on introducing a new menu. Hopefully, we’ll have new pasta and salads to offer.
