Virginia Garden Walk Community Meeting
June 8, 2023 @ 6:00 PM - 7:00 PM
Mixed among the mature existing plants, new signature trees and shrubs provide focal points that unify the landscape that has been established for many decades. With carefully selected additions to the garden, the community can observe how a small ecosystem sustains people and wildlife, including birds, pollinators, and invertebrates.

Today the VGW is a green corridor that connects the entire Bernal community. Seniors from the Coleridge Commons on Virginia Ave use the VGW to attend programs at the Bernal Heights Neighborhood Center (BHNC) on Cortland St. Youths use the VGW to commute to the Paul Revere Middle School. The wider Bernal Community uses the VGW to connect to independently owned businesses on Cortland St, the neighborhood Safeway, Walgreen Pharmacy, the Bernal library, and the public transportation hub on Mission St.
The Friends of the VGW received a Community Challenge Grant in the spring of 2022 to fund improvements at the VGW. The proposal seeks to restore the garden, leaving the natural beauty but improving its sustainability. We will add public art, a resting area, lighting, and water and soil conservation features. In addition, we aim to create a welcoming space for all travelers who come through the VGW.
