Preserving Tradition and Flavors: A Journey with Tacos Los Altos on Cortland Avenue

Can you tell us a little bit about Tacos Los Altos’s history and how it came to be located on Cortland Avenue?Ā

Our dad initially started his business by catering onsite for family and friends all around the Bay Area. We used to always tell him he should get a ā€œlittle storeā€ to sell his food. In February 2013, he decided to make that a reality and opened Taco Los Altos.

What is it like taking over the Family business?

We grew up doing it. We always helped our parents in the restaurant, so it’s natural for us to want to continue. There are challenges, of course, but we enjoy it.

What sets Tacos Los Altos apart from other taco places in the area?Ā

Our vegetarian options definitely set us apart from most other Mexican restaurants. We make sure our vegetarian options are filling and flavorful, and we can tell our customers appreciate that!

How do you ensure the quality and authenticity of your food?Ā

We need to keep our meals as authentic as possible by bringing flavors from our hometown in TepatitlĆ”n, Jalisco. We also take inspiration from our cooks who come from different states in Mexico for our recipes. (If you haven’t yet, try Lorena’s Cochinita Pibil. A traditional dish from YucatĆ”n)

What are some of your most popular menu items, and why do you think they are so popular?Ā

Our most popular item is our nachos. The thickness of our chips makes for a great bite, even until the last bite! Some of our other popular items are Mole Poblano, Enchiladas Los Altos, and Quesabirria.

Tell us about Taco Tuesdays.

We started Taco Tuesday to attract more customers. Over the past couple of years, we have remodeled and added items to our menu, so we want to attract new people.

What advice would you give to someone considering starting their own business?

Starting a business requires a lot of time and dedication, but it is all worth it if you’re passionate about what you do.

What do you like to do outside the restaurant?

Spending time with family

How do you stay connected with the local community, and what role do you see Tacos Los Altos playing in the neighborhood?Ā

We have built special relationships with our neighbors here on Cortland. Taco Los Altos is where you can dine and find your neighbors or classmates. We have seen the neighborhood kids grow up; this neighborhood is like family.

What are your plans for Tacos Los Altos’s future, and how do you see the business evolving over time?Ā

We plan on sticking to our one location on Cortland and want to focus more on catering for company events, birthday parties, etc.
