Playa Azul: Bernal Heights’ Premier Destination for Authentic Mexican Seafood

A Family Legacy Rooted in the Mission

We recently sat down with Everardo Sanchez to learn more about Playa Azul, located on the Mission-Bernal corridor.

For nearly three decades, Playa Azul has been San Francisco’s most authentic Mexican seafood experience, all started by one man’s vision. In 1995, Everardo’s father saw something missing in the city’s vibrant culinary landscape: genuine Mexican seafood prepared with the care and quality it deserved.

After successfully running one of the Mission’s first taquerias on 24th Street in the early 1990s, the elder Sanchez had a bold dream. He wanted to create something different—a restaurant that would showcase the rich seafood traditions of Mexico’s coastal regions while giving diners a front-row seat to the culinary magic. He identified a location, demolished the existing building, and built Playa Azul from the ground up on three key pillars: premium seafood, fine tequila, and an open kitchen where guests could watch their meals being prepared.

Today, that family tradition continues stronger than ever. Everardo runs day-to-day operations alongside his sister Alejandra & younger brother Isahi. While their father remains involved in a semi-retired capacity, the three siblings have taken the helm of this beloved Bernal Heights institution, bringing fresh energy while honoring the authentic vision that started it all.

The Sanchez family’s roots in the neighborhood run deep. They moved to Bernal Heights in 1988, living on Ellsworth Street, just up the hill from where the SF Tequila Shop stands today, before eventually relocating to San Mateo County. But their heart has always remained in the Mission and Bernal Heights communities that supported them from the beginning.

Uncompromising Quality: Where Premium Ingredients Meet Authentic Tradition

What truly sets Playa Azul apart is its unwavering commitment to ingredient quality, rare in the Bay Area’s Mexican restaurant scene. At the same time, many establishments cut corners with cheaper imported seafood. Playa Azul sources only the finest ingredients, regardless of cost.

Their signature crab ceviche features fresh Dungeness crab at $52 per pound. The shrimp, a staple in many of their dishes, is sourced from Mexico, is wild-caught and sustainably harvested, and costs twice or three times what restaurants pay for imported alternatives from Indonesia or India. Even their land-based proteins receive the same premium treatment: their steaks are Black Angus from Creekstone Farms, a cut above what you’ll find at comparable restaurants anywhere in Northern California.

“There’s no Mexican restaurant in San Francisco or Northern California using the ingredients that we use,” Everardo explains with justified pride.

The menu itself reflects a beautiful marriage of two Mexican coastal traditions. When the restaurant first opened, the family brought in a chef from Veracruz to develop recipes that blend the seafood styles of both Veracruz and Jalisco. The result is a menu that honors authentic Mexican coastal cuisine; a far cry from the tacos and burritos many Americans associate with Mexican food.

Their two signature dishes, the shrimp cocktail and aguachiles, showcase this commitment to authenticity and quality. And for those seeking something refreshing, their specialty cocktails include crowd favorites like the paloma, michelada, and a unique piña colada made with Mitchell’s ice cream, supporting another beloved local business.

“A lot of people, when they think about Mexican food, only think about tacos and burritos,” says Everardo. “But Mexican cuisine is completely different. It’s been an educational thing, helping people understand that these ingredients are expensive and take time to prepare properly.”

Tequila, Mezcal, and the Spirit of Mexico

While the seafood draws diners in, Playa Azul’s spirits program keeps them coming back. Everardo has made it his personal mission to curate one of the most authentic and diverse collections of Mexican spirits in the city. Month after month, he introduces new tequilas, mezcals, and other Mexican spirits—including gins, rums, and wines—all crafted the traditional way, additive-free and true to their origins.

“In Mexico, they make everything—not just tequila, not just mezcal,” Everardo explains. “My idea is to specialize in Mexican ingredients, Mexican spirits, Mexican food, and Mexican drinks. That’s what we’re all about.”

The restaurant is actively developing a special events program centered around these spirits, planning mezcal tastings and tequila education sessions for enthusiasts and newcomers alike. With a second floor featuring a full bar, full kitchen, outdoor patio, and private event space, Playa Azul is perfectly positioned to become the Bay Area’s go-to destination for anyone looking to deepen their appreciation of Mexico’s rich distilling traditions.

Game Day Central: Your Neighborhood Sports Bar with Flair

But Playa Azul isn’t just about fine dining and craft cocktails; it’s also become a beloved gathering spot for sports fans throughout Bernal Heights and beyond. With four screens strategically placed throughout the restaurant, it’s the perfect place to catch the big game while enjoying food and drinks that outshine typical sports bar fare.
Whether you’re cheering on the 49ers, Giants, Warriors, or following international soccer matches, Playa Azul has you covered. The restaurant shows all major games and sweetens the deal with special happy hour promotions timed to match events. Catch a weekend boxing match? They’ll run a morning happy hour. Big playoff game? They’ll create a special promotion just for it.

Their regular happy hour runs Monday through Friday from 3 pm to 6 pm, with rotating specials that change monthly or bimonthly. But it’s those spontaneous game-day happy hours, whether at 10 am for an early match or during prime time, that have made Playa Azul the neighborhood’s favorite spot to experience the electric energy of live sports while savoring authentic Mexican cuisine.

Rising from the Ashes: Resilience and Community

The restaurant’s journey hasn’t been without challenges. In 2016, Playa Azul suffered a devastating fire that forced a complete rebuild. The reconstruction brought some changes—city planning requirements pushed the restaurant back from the street, creating visibility challenges that the family continues to navigate. Where large windows once invited passersby to look inside, a small hallway now occupies the space, which some potential customers miss.

But true to their resilient spirit, the Sanchez family rebuilt, maintaining their father’s original vision of an open kitchen while upgrading to meet modern standards. They’ve adapted by engaging more with neighborhood events and by spreading the word about their hidden gem.

A Commitment to Excellence in Every Detail

From the moment you mention a food allergy, you’ll see Playa Azul’s commitment to guest care in action. Every server is thoroughly trained on the menu’s ingredients, and any allergy concerns are communicated immediately from the front of house to the kitchen. The team will either thoroughly clean equipment, use fresh pots and pans, or modify dishes entirely to ensure every guest’s safety and satisfaction.

This attention to detail extends to every aspect of the dining experience, from the carefully sourced ingredients and additive-free spirits to the authentic recipes passed down through generations, and to the warm, family-run atmosphere that makes every visit feel special.

Experience the Difference

Playa Azul stands as a testament to what happens when family values, authentic tradition, and an uncompromising commitment to quality come together. It’s more than just a restaurant; it’s a bridge to Mexico’s rich coastal culinary heritage, a showcase for the country’s finest spirits, a gathering place for game day celebrations, and a proud family business serving the Bernal Heights community with heart.

Whether you’re a longtime fan of Mexican seafood or someone ready to discover what authentic coastal Mexican cuisine truly tastes like, Playa Azul invites you to experience the difference that nearly 30 years of family passion and premium ingredients can make.
