Class Description: Mayumi will introduce botanical printing using fresh leaves, flowers, and minerals to transfer natural colors and shapes from plants onto fiber. This introductory class will give you an understanding of dye plants and deepen your relationship with nature. You will take home a beautiful, one-of-a-kind silk scarf dyed with fresh plants from the Bay Area.

Materials: All materials are included. Each attendee will receive a ready-to-dye silk scarf (11 x 64″) and all the tools needed for participation. Fresh leaves and flowers will be provided, but you are also encouraged to bring flowers from your garden for an ultra-personal scarf!

About the Instructor: Mayumi is a San Francisco-based fiber artist who works with natural dye and botanical prints on various media. All materials she uses are sustainably harvested from the Bay Area. She studied Ikebana, field botany, and edible and medicinal plants. She is also an avid forager of wild plants and mushrooms, which she uses for dyeing silk and woolā€”and which she also eats. Mayumi grows her dye plant in a community garden in San Francisco, using all-natural and mushroom dyes to achieve vibrant colors for her background. For leaf patterns, she grows her own and also harvests fresh plants from around the Bay Area. She aims to create sustainable art using nature and natural materials.

Mayumi’s artwork is sold at the San Francisco Asian Art Museum, Seattle Art Museum, San Jose Textile Museum, and prestigious art festivals. She was most recently awarded at the renowned Mill Valley Arts Festival.
