Winter Fruit Tree Pruning Workshop
Master the Art of Dormant Pruning at Alemany Farm
Gardeners and fruit enthusiasts are invited to a hands-on morning in the orchard to demystify the “when, why, and how” of winter pruning. This workshop focuses on apple and plum trees, teaching participants how to apply tree biology to encourage a bountiful, healthy harvest.

What to Expect
The class blends theory with active field practice, allowing attendees to move beyond observation and gain direct experience with the trees in the orchard.
Tree Biology 101: Understanding growth patterns and how trees respond to specific cuts.
Health & Productivity: Techniques to improve airflow, sunlight penetration, and fruit quality.
The Tool Kit: Guidance on choosing and maintaining the proper tools for the job.
Field Practice: Real-time pruning demonstrations followed by guided practice on the farm’s resident trees.
Note: The curriculum focuses on deciduous fruit trees (apples and plums). While the instructors can discuss high-level citrus pruning basics, citrus care is not the primary focus of this session.
About the Instructors
The workshop is led by Abby Bell, Alemany Farm Director, and Vanessa Lieu, Alemany Farm Manager. Together, they bring over 15 years of combined experience in fruit tree care and orchard management. Both instructors share a deep commitment to the land and the community at Alemany Farm and look forward to sharing their expertise with workshop participants.
