Swimming in San Francisco: Resources for Families and Swimmers
As a lifelong water enthusiast, I made it a priority to introduce my daughter to swimming as soon as experts gave the okay. Ten years ago, when she was six months old, her aquatic journey began at La Petite Baleen Swim School at Crissy Field in the Presidio. Since that first dip, we’ve lived abroad and traveled extensively, always looking for a pool whenever possible. Her enduring love for the water—from the comfortable temperature to the engaging teachers and their fun games – began in that nurturing environment a decade ago. If you’re looking to give your child a joyful start to swimming, La Petite Baleen is a top-rated option. You can find more information at www.swimlpb.com. Note: La Petite Baleen’s San Francisco location is at 933 Mason St in the Presidio, offering heated indoor pools and classes for all ages, including free infant lessons for babies 2-5 months old.
San Francisco has a rich, albeit often chilly, swimming history, from the frigid Bay waters to the historical, now-defunct Sutro Baths. Fortunately for residents, as the city has grown and evolved, so has the number of accessible pools.
San Francisco Recreation and Park Department (SF Rec & Park) Pools
SF Rec & Park operates nine municipal pools, which are an excellent, affordable option for residents. Although the article was originally written during the COVID-19 pandemic, the pools are now fully operational, offering various programs, including recreational swimming and classes. It’s always a good idea to check the website for the most current schedules, as drop-in times can change.
The nine municipal pools include:
- Balboa Pool: Located in Balboa Park, popular for recreational and lap swimming.
- Coffman Pool: Located in Visitacion Valley at the southeastern entrance of McLaren Park.
- Garfield Pool: Located at the southern end of the Mission District, next to a park and playground.
- Hamilton Pool: Located in Japantown, this is the only SF Rec & Park pool with two indoor water slides.
- Martin Luther King, Jr. Pool: Located in the Bayview District, featuring a main pool and a separate wading pool for kids.
- Mission Community Pool: Located in the Mission District, it is the city’s only public outdoor pool and offers swimming classes for all levels and ages, especially during the summer.
- North Beach Pool: A well-established community pool popular with multi-generational swimmers.
- Rossi Pool: Located in the Richmond District, it’s a neighborhood favorite offering a variety of classes and programs for all ages.
- Sava Pool: Located just north of Stern Grove, this is another popular neighborhood facility for recreation, lap, and competitive swimming.

Other Community Swimming Options
In addition to the municipal pools, the city has various other pools that offer classes, programs, and recreational swimming:
- Mission Bay Outdoor School (Mission Bay Aquatic Center): Located on Owens Street, near the iconic UCSF Mission Bay campus. This facility is a relatively newer addition to the area and provides classes, as well as recreational and lap swimming options. Note: You may also find information about the UCSF Mission Bay pools, which are part of a private fitness center and typically require a membership or day pass.
- YMCA of San Francisco: The Presidio Community YMCA (Letterman Pool) and the Embarcadero YMCA both offer excellent aquatic programs, including lap swimming, swim lessons, and family swim times. The Presidio Y features a six-lane, 25-yard indoor pool, a therapy pool, and a hot tub. The Embarcadero Y also has a 25-meter pool. YMCA membership provides access to all its facilities. For children’s recreational swimming, a swim test may be required. As always, a parent/guardian should be present for non-swimmers and, for common sense, even for those who pass the test. Visit the YMCA of San Francisco website for details.
I strongly recommend visiting a few of these pools to find the perfect fit for you and your child’s needs. Whether you stick to one or rotate them for variety, the most important thing is ensuring your child gains the fun and lifesaving skill of swimming.
