Friendship Framed: Ten Years of Visual Dialogue
Inclusions Gallery is delighted to present Friendship Framed, a compelling three-person exhibition celebrating a decade of shared artistic exploration between San Francisco artists Catherine Mackey, Diane Olivier, and Laurie Wigham.
The story of Friendship Framed began in San Francisco’s local art community, where Diane and Catherine first connected in a figure drawing class at City College, and later brought Laurie into the circle after meeting at an SF Sketch Crawl. Over the past ten years, this initial connection evolved into a deep creative partnership built on trust, curiosity, and joint discovery.
Together, the three artists have traveled extensively on drawing trips, capturing environments ranging from the industrial history of Mare Island and the open expanses of Sierra Valley to urban landscapes in Los Angeles and locations across Europe. While these shared journeys often lead to overlapping subject matter, each artist responds through her own distinct lens, medium, and practice.
Featured Artists
Catherine Mackey: Originally a commercial interior architect from London, Catherine has spent 30 years in the Bay Area building a rich practice across painting, printmaking, and drawing. Based in her studio at 1890 Bryant St. in San Francisco’s Mission District, her work is held in private and public collections across the United States, Europe, and Australia.
Diane Olivier: A Bay Area resident since 1990, Diane taught drawing at City College of San Francisco for nearly three decades (1991 to 2020). A dedicated educator and community builder, she regularly hosts drop-in figure drawing sessions at her SF studio, leads monthly outdoor pastel meetups, and guides annual drawing workshops abroad.
Laurie Wigham: After nearly 30 years as a graphic designer in the tech industry, Laurie stepped away from screens to immerse herself in watercolor painting. She co-founded the SF Sketchers Meetup group in 2012, which has grown to thousands of members. Laurie captures both wilderness and cityscapes, and has taught at SF State University’s Sierra Nevada Field Campus, the Academy of Art University, and through national park artist residencies.
Exhibition Overview
Friendship Framed highlights how individual expression and collaborative spirit can coexist without competition. By bringing together oil and found paper assemblages, pastels, and watercolors, the exhibition offers a rare look at how three distinct voices influence and elevate one another through a sustained, ten-year visual conversation.
