Day of Remembrance Screening: MURDER IN THE HIGH DESERT
Bernal Heights Outdoor Cinema presents a special screening of MURDER IN THE HIGH DESERT to commemorate the Day of Remembrance, honoring Japanese Americans incarcerated during World War II. The film investigates the 1943 murder of an inmate at the Topaz concentration camp by military personnel and its subsequent coverup. When a forgotten monument is discovered 77 years later, its unearthing raises profound questions about who controls the narrative of Japanese American history and how it’s preserved.
Join Bernal filmmaker Emiko Omori and Nancy Ukai, co-founder of Tsuru for Solidarity, for a post-screening discussion. Ukai represents a direct action project of Japanese American social justice advocates working to end detention sites.
This revealing film and timely conversation takes place at Bernal Library, 500 Cortland Avenue. While admission is free, seating is limited. Don’t miss this opportunity to engage with the filmmaker and guest in an important dialogue about history, justice, and remembrance.
