February 18, 2023 @ 1:00 PM - 4:30 PM

Water Gardening & Alemany Pond Restoration Day

Instructor: Brett Stephens

Learn about aquatic plants and water management and help with our late winter pond maintenance. Learn about pond ecology and support habitat restoration for the red-wing blackbird, tule reeds, and more. The pond workday will include a discussion on pond ecology, the importance of water sources on organic farms, strategies for management, and creating plant and animal diversity. Bring your hip waders or rain boots, if you have them (a few will be provided), gloves, and snacks, and join us in getting your hands wet!

Brett Stephens is the owner/project manager of San Francisco Landscapes. He is certified in permaculture design, a Bay-Friendly professional, ARCSA accredited professional, and a long-time volunteer at Alemany Farm.

Suggested Donation: $0-$15; no one turned away for lack of funds. Our workshops are donation-based and support the farm. Please give at the suggested level or higher if you are able.

About Alemany Farms

Friends of Alemany Farm is a group that manages the horticulture, volunteer, and educational programs at Alemany Farm, a 3.5-acre organic farm ecosystem in southeast San Francisco. The farm sits on the unceded ancestral homeland of the Ramaytush Ohlone peoples, who are the original inhabitants of the San Francisco Peninsula and the original stewards of this land.

Our Mission

Friends of Alemany Farm grows food security and educates residents about how they can become their food producers. In addition, we strive to increase ecological knowledge and habitat value and to sow the seeds for economic and environmental justice. The food we grow is given away for free to neighbors, volunteers, The Free Farm Stand, and other groups.

We pursue four main goals:

  • They are fostering Environmental Education by introducing children and adults to the idea that local food production can be part of a healthy ecosystem and inspiring visitors to start their gardens at home.
  • We are boosting food security by providing organic, healthy food to community members.
  • Growing Leaders through the communal ethic of barn-raising encourages people to play an active role in decision-making.
  • We are promoting Ecological-Economic Development by using urban agriculture to develop job skills.
