SUMMARY:A Place for Pichon: Sculptural Works by Steve Firestone
DESCRIPTION:A Place for Pichon: Sculptural Works by Steve Firestone\nMichelle Thomas Fine Art Gallery + Studio is pleased to present “A Place for Pichon\,” a solo exhibition by San Francisco artist Steve Firestone. This collection represents over thirty years of sculptural exploration\, transforming the industrial ephemera of the modern world into objects of personality and place. \nEvent Details\nOpening Reception: Friday\, April 17\, 2026 | 5:00 PM – 7:00 PM\nExhibition Dates: On view through June 26\, 2026\nLocation: Michelle Thomas Fine Art Gallery + Studio \nArtist Statement\nThe sculptures selected for this exhibition span over 30 years. The ephemera of an industrialized world are materials used consistently though not exclusively. They are reimagined and imbued with a new life once transformed. \nThe artist invites the viewer to identify the architectural influences in the work\, a style once described as “Bauhaus Romanticism.” Like a scavenger\, Firestone continually collects “stuff\,” trusting that these dormant materials will reveal their potential in the future. While some pieces in this selection reveal a distinct personality\, others evoke a profound sense of place. \nAlongside this group are examples from the Pandemic Pantry series. Created during the Covid-19 lockdowns\, these works were inspired by the newfound cultural interest in pickling and fermenting. Looking at studio shelves packed with “ingredients” collected over the years\, Firestone began a version of “canning” using jars and bottles. The process required a steep learning curve and new tools\, resulting in a deep appreciation for the craft of building ships in a bottle. \nAbout Steve Firestone\nMuch like the work in this exhibition\, Steve Firestone has often reimagined the course of his own life. Originally a student of architecture at Arizona State University\, he later earned a degree in art from the University of California\, Santa Cruz\, with an emphasis on painting and drawing. \nAfter a career building and operating three successive framing businesses in San Francisco\, Firestone earned a teaching credential from San Francisco State University. He served for two decades with the San Francisco Unified School District before retiring in 2020. Today\, he works from his San Francisco home-studio\, a transition he describes as “joyful and fulfilling.” While his practice is rooted in sculpture\, he is currently focused on works on paper and a return to painting. \nPlan Your Visit\nExperience the transformation of the everyday into the extraordinary. Visit the gallery to explore the collection or shop the show online.

SUMMARY:Hardy Hanson: IN THE SPRING
DESCRIPTION:Hardy Hanson: IN THE SPRING\nOpening reception: January 23\, 5-7 p.m.\nOn view through March 31\, 2026\, at Michelle Thomas Fine Art Gallery + Studio \nHardy Hanson worked passionately and prolifically for 55 years\, painting\, sculpting\, printmaking\, and teaching art\, often simultaneously. He found a positive synergism working on all at once\, and many pieces took several years to complete. This “grasshopper” approach allowed for one medium to influence another\, resolving artistic dilemmas. \nDuring the 1970s\, Hanson focused primarily on creating detailed sculptural works using repeated\, unorthodox materials. Small yet powerful\, these sculptures produce simultaneous feelings of fascination and aversion\, an uneasy tension. Hardy said he chose “micro elements to address macro themes\,” manipulating order to reveal the underlying chaos and darker side of human nature. \nHis sly titles were intellectual keys to engaging and expanding viewers’ perceptions. Towards the end of his life\, Hardy explored more existential questions\, shifting his focus from the world around him to the world within. His lifelong interest in the interactions of painted fragments culminated in this series of beautiful paintings. \nDense drifts of pointillist dots create illusory volumes of light and space\, a visual ebb and flow\, expressing the mysterious connection we have with our infinite cosmos. He titled these paintings his “Meditations” series. \nABOUT THE ARTIST: HARDY HANSON\nFebruary 16\, 1935–January 25\, 2012 \nHardy Hanson was born and raised in Long Beach\, California\, and was educated at Long Beach City College\, University of California\, Los Angeles\, and Yale University\, where he studied under Josef Albers. He went on to teach at San Fernando Valley Junior College\, California State University\, Northridge\, UCLA\, University of Southern California\, and finally\, as Professor of Art Emeritus at Porter College\, University of California\, Santa Cruz\, for 29 years. He was a core member of the UCSC Art Department. \nWhen not in his studio\, Hanson’s artistic expression took its most powerful and enduring form in the four-acre terraced garden surrounding the home he and his wife\, Ruth\, built in Santa Cruz in 1971. He sculpted the hillsides with re-purposed broken concrete\, creating terraced orchards\, vegetable and rose gardens\, no less intricate than his meticulous art. The daily rhythms of nature suited his artistic habits. \nHanson’s work is included in the following permanent collections: \nColorado Springs Fine Art Center\nCrocker Art Museum\, Sacramento\nFresno Art Museum\nHirshhorn Museum\, Washington\, D.C.\nLong Beach Museum of Art\nLos Angeles County Museum of Art\nPalm Springs Desert Museum\, California\nThe Metropolitan Museum of Art\, New York\nMilwaukee Art Center\nNational Gallery of Australia\nSanta Barbara Museum of Art\nSan Diego Museum of Art \nCalendar – Bernal Heights and Beyond\nDISTANT EXISTENCE: Paintings by Samuel Kampelman Exhibition\nInclusions Gallery: Dreams in the City – Beata Kaczmarek

SUMMARY:DISTANT EXISTENCE: Paintings by Samuel Kampelman Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:DISTANT EXISTENCE: Paintings by Samuel Kampelman Exhibition\nOpening Reception: Saturday\, November 2\, 7-9 p.m.\nOn view: November 2\, 2024 – January 2025\, at Michelle Thomas Fine Art Gallery + Studio \nSamuel Kampelman is an abstract representational painter living in St. Louis\, Missouri. He received his BFA in painting from the Maryland Institute College of Art and then attended Indiana University–Bloomington to pursue his MFA in painting. “My paintings are influenced by my curiosity about the spaces and beings we have yet to discover\,” he says\, “A fascination with the unknown fuels my imagination\, prompting me to envision how these imagined entities and environments might exist in distant\, unexplored realms. My art bridges the fantastical and tangible\, inviting viewers to ponder the limitless possibilities of existence beyond our current understanding.” \nKampelman’s interdisciplinary process begins with collecting and manipulating recycled materials\, which he cuts and assembles into sculptures that embody the concepts he seeks to visualize. These sculptures are suspended from strings and placed within an enclosed\, constructed space\, which he strategically lights to enhance their visual impact. The interplay of light and shadow in this controlled environment creates dynamic\, ever-changing scenes that provide visual references for his oil paintings. “I aim to spark a sense of wonder and invite viewers to embark on their journeys of discovery\,” Kampelman says\, “By merging the abstract with the representational\, I hope to inspire a deeper appreciation for the mysteries that lie beyond our immediate perception and encourage imaginative exploration of the unknown.” \nCalendar – Bernal Heights and Beyond\nMichelle Thomas Fine Art Gallery\nMichelle Thomas Fine Art Gallery sits at the intersection of Bernal Heights\, Noe Valley\, and the Mission in San Francisco. We feature emerging and established artists worldwide in dialogue with Bay Area icons working across media and genres. These artists are meticulous in their technique\, compelled to make meaning from chaos and identify the profound in the pedestrian. The Gallery references a global\, cosmopolitan heritage alongside Western art and design history\, refusing marginality and the deskilled\, folk\, naive identity often imposed upon creatives from non-Western contexts. Our program defies neat curatorial categories\, with presentations that prioritize rare poetic concerns or merge dissimilar materials to establish a singular aesthetic. \nHardy Hanson: IN THE SPRING
