SUMMARY:Cooking at the Farm: Flavors of Fall
DESCRIPTION:Cooking From the Farm: Flavors of Fall\nSaturday\, November 7th\, 10 AM – 12:30 PM – at Alemany Farm \nIn this workshop\, participants will harvest veggies from the farm and cook with them in our outdoor kitchen \nCome to Alemany Farm to explore seasonal cooking in the fall months. Learn why eating seasonally matters\, how to harvest seasonal crops\, and how to balance flavors in warm fall meals. Together\, we will cook a few comforting dishes (vegetarian-friendly) in our outdoor kitchen and enjoy them together in community. Please bring your own knife and cutting board! \nPlease note: kids 15 years or older are welcome \nInstructors: Tamara Kahhale and Auguste Brown\nTamara Kahhale (she/her) is a former electrical engineer turned landworker who worked in climate technology before realizing she wanted to approach the climate crisis through an agricultural\, land-based lens. She has developed a deep passion for regenerative agriculture and soil health\, as well as food justice and sovereignty\, climate education\, and community-driven practices. As the daughter of Lebanese immigrants\, she has a deep connection to food and believes everyone has the right to eat culturally relevant food in ways that help the planet. She has 1.5 years of professional kitchen experience—both in the kitchen and teaching—and has been a hobby chef and baker throughout her adult life. Tamara has been part of the Alemany Farm team for 1.5 years as a workday leader and garden/nutrition coordinator. \nAuguste Brown (he/him) has volunteered at Alemany since early 2025 and is an experienced home cook. Coming from a background in the climate space\, Auguste is passionate about building food systems that nourish us and our planet alike. As a Bay Area native\, he also gets fulfillment from a deep connection to the land and local seasonality. Auguste firmly believes in the power of food to bring people together\, and has seen this firsthand at Alemany Farm. When not volunteering at the farm\, Auguste works in renewable energy and is always happy to nerd out about batteries or microgrids. \nAlemany Farm\nThe largest agricultural site in San Francisco\, Alemany Farm offers everyone a chance to learn where their food comes from\, pitch in\, and take home fresh produce for free. Learn more below and come get your hands dirty with us! \nSuggested Donation: $55 (includes materials/ ingredients). No one is turned away for lack of funds. Alemany Farm workshops are donation-based and sliding scale to make them accessible to all. Please give at the suggested level or higher if you are able. All donations support the food production and distribution of free food at Alemany Farm. \nAccessibility Information:\nThis workshop will be held outdoors on the farm and in the outdoor kitchen\, which is currently accessible only by stairs. The workshop will include a short lecture/discussion\, a farm walk/harvest\, and then cooking and eating. Alemany Farm is not ADA accessible at this time. Pathways are on uneven ground. The bathrooms and kitchen space are accessible only by stairway. We apologize for any inconvenience! Thank you for understanding. \nCalendar – Bernal Heights and Beyond\nBernal ConnectMike Doherty serves as Chief Experience Officer at Greening Projects\, a nonprofit organization dedicated to transforming underutilized urban spaces into vibrant green areas

SUMMARY:Tompkins Stairway Garden Work Day
DESCRIPTION:Tompkins Stairway Garden Work Day\nJoin us on the 1st Saturday of every month at the Tompkins Stairway Garden from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. to engage in rewarding activities such as weeding\, pruning\, and litter picking\, and help maintain this quaint green space in our beloved Bernal neighborhood! \nIf you often use these stairs to travel to or from the Alemany Farmers Market\, this is the perfect opportunity to help preserve their beauty. \nWe will provide work gloves and the necessary tools for the tasks. Moreover\, experts from the U.C. Master Gardener program will impart knowledge on plant care. For safety\, we recommend wearing long-sleeved tops\, long pants\, and sturdy shoes. Don’t forget to bring water to keep yourself hydrated. \nLocation: At the junction of Tompkins Avenue and Nevada Street\, right at the top of the stairs. Join us and make a difference! \n\nOnce a trash-covered hillside\, San Francisco’s Tompkins Stairway Garden is a safe and welcoming street park featuring a drought-tolerant garden in year-round bloom and a colorful tiled stairway. Dedicated attention from surrounding neighbors has transformed the site into a community greenspace and pedestrian corridor serving the Alemany Farmers’ Market and nearby schools and shopping districts. \nCalendar – Bernal Heights and Beyond\nUpper Esmeralda Garden Stairway- Community Workdays\nBernal ConnectMike Doherty serves as Chief Experience Officer at Greening Projects\, a nonprofit organization dedicated to transforming underutilized urban spaces into vibrant green areas

SUMMARY:Upper Esmeralda Garden Stairway- Community Workdays
DESCRIPTION:Upper Esmeralda Garden Stairway – Community Workdays\nThe Esmeralda Stairs are three block-long stairs that people can use to climb the west side of Bernal Hill. The bottom flight of stairs starts at Coleridge St.\, one block east of Mission St. The middle set of stairs goes from Prospect Ave. to Winfield St. The top section of stairs ends at Winfield and Esmeralda Streets. The Esmeralda Stairs are utilitarian\, but they’re also fun. Two slides are often called the Winfield Street Slides in the mid-section of the stairs. These slides are 40 feet long\, making for an exhilarating return trip after you reach the summit. \nThe Community Workdays are held on the 3rd Saturday of each month from 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM. \nCalendar – Bernal Heights and Beyond\nBernal ConnectMike Doherty serves as Chief Experience Officer at Greening Projects\, a nonprofit organization dedicated to transforming underutilized urban spaces into vibrant green areas

SUMMARY:Alemany Farm Volunteer Day
DESCRIPTION:Alemany Farm Volunteer Day\nVolunteers are invited to join Friends of Alemany Farm to learn about urban agriculture and support local food security initiatives. Community workdays are open to individuals of all experience levels and ages on Mondays and Saturday afternoons from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM. \nAdvance registration is required for all Saturday sessions and for first-time Monday attendees. Returning Monday volunteers are encouraged to register to receive schedule updates or cancellation notices\, though it is not strictly required. Participants should register only for shifts they can fully commit to and provide immediate notice of cancellation so waitlisted individuals can be accommodated. \nParticipants should plan to arrive on time. While staying for the entire session from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM is encouraged\, early departures are permitted if communicated to staff upon arrival. Every participant\, including children\, must be registered individually and sign a waiver upon arrival. \nNew volunteers receive an orientation tour at the start of the workday before transitioning to farm tasks. Projects may include weeding\, planting\, bed preparation\, fruit tree care\, composting\, mulching\, pathway maintenance\, and greenhouse work. Workdays conclude with a vegetable harvest for volunteers to take home. \nWork continues during light rain; volunteers should dress in suitable rain gear. Heavy rain will result in cancellation. \nTools are provided on site\, though volunteers may bring their own gloves\, hori hori knives\, or clippers. Recommended items to bring include: \n\nWater bottle\nHat\nSturdy shoes\nJacket with layered clothing\nSunscreen\nSnacks\nBag for harvested produce\n\nBecause the farm is a public space without secure storage\, volunteers should travel light and leave valuables at home. \nHealth and safety measures include available handwashing stations\, hand sanitizer\, and clean gloves. Individuals experiencing illness symptoms must stay home. Friends of Alemany Farm reserves the right to end a volunteer shift if safety guidelines are not followed.
