SUMMARY:Prodigal Daughter\, Screening with Director Q&A
DESCRIPTION:Prodigal Daughter\, Screening with Director Q&A\nSaturday | Sábado | October 17 | 2:00–3:00 p.m. \nA screening of Prodigal Daughter\, followed by a live conversation featuring the film’s director\, Mabel Valdiviezo. \nSpace limited. Reservations required: (415) 355-2810\, email bhemgr@sfpl.org\, or sign up at the reference desk. \nProdigal Daughter takes a deeply personal look into the immigrant experience through the eyes of filmmaker and former punk artist Mabel Valdiviezo. Escaping Peru’s Fujimori dictatorship\, Valdiviezo fled to the United States\, leaving her family behind. Sixteen years later\, she returns to a Peru she no longer recognizes\, confronting haunting childhood memories\, fractured family ties\, and her troubled past as an undocumented immigrant. Blending vérité scenes\, vibrant photo-paintings and youthful animation\, the film explores belonging\, identity and the transformative power of art—challenging the “good immigrant” versus “bad immigrant” narrative. \nNR\, 60 mins. English & Spanish. Subtitles in English and Spanish. \nThis film is supported by the San Francisco Arts Commission\, and program activities are sponsored in part by a grant from the San Francisco Arts Commission. #SFACfunded \nMabel Valdiviezo is an award-winning filmmaker and multidisciplinary artist who creates immersive work across film\, video art\, mixed media\, and performance. Using a poetic visual language\, her work explores migration\, identity\, belonging\, and healing justice. Her documentary Prodigal Daughter has received several awards and was recently nominated for the Cinema Tropical Award for Best U.S. Latinx Film of the Year. \nConnect:\nWebsite – Prodigal Daughter \nSF Film Festivals\nBernal ConnectMike Doherty serves as Chief Experience Officer at Greening Projects\, a nonprofit organization dedicated to transforming underutilized urban spaces into vibrant green areas

SUMMARY:Face-to-Face with the Filmmaker: Rodrigo Williams
DESCRIPTION:Face-to-Face with the Filmmaker: Rodrigo Williams\nJoin our friends from Bernal Heights Outdoor Cinema for a screening of Vibeland: Zodiac\, followed by a conversation with the Bernal filmmaker\, Rodrigo Williams. \nVIBELAND: ZODIAC\nVIBELAND: ZODIAC \nIn case you missed it\, see last season’s short sci-fi thriller presented at both Film Crawl on Mission and Film Crawl on Cortland and meet the filmmaker! The pilot for a San Francisco-based urban legend series follows a woman’s date night that turns into a cat-and-mouse game with the Zodiac killer in a surreal version of San Francisco. Bernal filmmaker Rodrigo Williams will appear for a conversation and Q&A. \nDirector\, Rodrigo (Roddy) Williams\nI grew up in San Francisco\, bouncing around all four corners of the City\, now settling in the center of the City\, where different neighborhoods and cultures collide with my wife and baby girl. The eclecticness of where we live is fitting\, as my upbringing was just as much a melting pot as the City I’m from. My father is black\, and my mother is from Havana\, Cuba. This version of San Francisco is the backdrop behind most of my creative passions. What started as friends making music in their parents’ basement evolved into pursuing the dream seriously\, making music videos\, comedy sketches\, and short films\, and now operating Vibeland Productions\, LLC. At the root of it\, it’s always been making dope art with the homies and the resources in our very own backyard. \nCalendar – Bernal Heights and Beyond\nBernal ConnectMike Doherty serves as Chief Experience Officer at Greening Projects\, a nonprofit organization dedicated to transforming underutilized urban spaces into vibrant green areas
