SUMMARY:MOTHER VESSEL by REBECCA EDWARDS
DESCRIPTION:MOTHER VESSEL by REBECCA EDWARDS\nOn view through June 26\, 2026\, at Michelle Thomas Fine Art Gallery + Studio \nRebecca Edwards (born 1969) is an Australian poet and visual artist based in San Francisco. She has exhibited works on paper and found-object sculpture in Japan\, New Zealand\, and Australia\, with works held in private collections across these countries\, as well as in the United Kingdom\, Canada\, and the United States. The University of Queensland’s Fryer Library houses a collection of her works on paper\, including drawings\, paintings\, and papercuts\, alongside manuscripts\, journals\, and other ephemera (Rebecca Edwards Papers\, UQFL434). Mother Vessel is Edwards’ first exhibition in the United States. \nA childhood spent in remote parts of the South Pacific\, Papua New Guinea\, and Nauru\, and various regions of Australia\, including the Northern Territory\, Queensland\, and New South Wales\, exposed Rebecca Edwards to many different modes of existence and many different ways of experiencing and creating art. The culture of the Abelam people of the East Sepik\, PNG\, was an early and profound influence. \nThis foundation deepened over time through engagement with Nauruan and Kiribati Islander beadwork and needlework\, African fetish sculptures\, Catholic icon and shrine imagery\, and Japanese papercutting (kirie). At sixteen\, she spent a year in Japan living with a family in Hiroshima Prefecture\, an experience that informed her enduring connection to the country. She later studied at the University of Queensland\, majoring in Japanese language and culture\, and won the Ford Medal for Poetry twice. Several grants from Arts Queensland\, Australia Council\, and Asialink have supported her return visits to Japan to write and exhibit. \nRebecca Edwards is committed to sustainable practices that include repurposing materials destined for the landfill\, even when that means climbing into a dumpster! She is captivated by the doll form\, particularly paper dolls\, 12th-scale miniatures\, and sacred icons and fetishes. An experienced educator\, she has taught drawing\, papercutting\, mosaic\, poetry\, prose writing\, collage\, and bookmaking to students of all ages\, and has performed her poetry at major literary events in Australia\, New Zealand\, and Singapore. \nHer latest collection of poetry\, Plague Animals (Puncher and Wattmann\, 2020)\, is available for purchase at the gallery. \nCalendar – Bernal Heights and Beyond\nBernal ConnectMike Doherty serves as Chief Experience Officer at Greening Projects\, a nonprofit organization dedicated to transforming underutilized urban spaces into vibrant green areas

SUMMARY:Vibrant Earth – Claire Lau: Inclusions Gallery
DESCRIPTION:Vibrant Earth – Claire Lau\nThursday\, May 14\, 2026 – Sunday\, June 14\, 2026 \nOpening Reception: May 16\, 5–7 PM \nArtist Talk: May 31\, 4 PM \nFor this exhibition\, Claire Lau intentionally set out to chase the ephemeral beauty of California’s spring. From San Ramon to Pescadero\, from Point Reyes to the Carrizo Plain National Monument\, her goal is to relish the present and capture spring in a permanent form so that we can return to the joy of the experience. \nClaire Lau’s paintings celebrate nature\, light\, and color\, focusing on landscapes illuminated by the bright blue sky. She is drawn to undulating hills and mountains\, and to the way the Bay or the ocean interacts with the coastline. Her work often highlights vibrant plant life discovered within urban settings. During walks and hikes\, she identifies scenes that demand a return visit with her canvas\, easel\, and supplies. \nArtist Bio\nClaire was born in France\, grew up in Hong Kong\, and studied studio arts and music at Hampshire College\, MA. Since then\, she has lived in Hong Kong and Boston before settling in San Francisco in 2015. \nClaire has been painting in oils for 24 years and painting consistently en plein air for 15 years. She has exhibited her work in Hong Kong\, Massachusetts\, Chicago\, and the San Francisco Bay Area. \nShe is dedicated to plein air painting for two primary reasons. \nFirst\, painting outdoors helps her reconnect with the environment. In a tech-focused era in which people often become detached from nature and humanity\, she believes most people spend too much time in front of screens without paying attention to their surroundings. Setting up an easel outdoors allows her to spend days at a location\, experiencing fluctuating temperatures\, wind\, and the landscape’s sensory details. Through this process of observing changes in light\, air\, and flora\, she develops a profound personal connection with the site. \nSecondly\, Lau paints outdoors because she believes the human experience of a landscape cannot be replicated digitally. Photographs\, videos\, and 3D renderings often fail to capture the full experience or the true depth of colors seen by the naked eye. Her paintings act as a translation of her experience\, moving from her eyes to her brain and\, finally\, to her hands\, retelling a story. Responding to the shifting light and forms of nature\, she feels a sense of urgency to document these moments. \nWhen standing before her subject\, Lau searches for hidden hues and mixes a palette of saturated colors to convey the beauty of the world around her. \nClaire considers herself a global citizen and\, through her art and activism\, continuously strives to increase the care people have for nature\, society\, and each other. \nCalendar – Bernal Heights and Beyond\nBernal ConnectMike Doherty serves as Chief Experience Officer at Greening Projects\, a nonprofit organization dedicated to transforming underutilized urban spaces into vibrant green areas

SUMMARY:Digest: Lingering After a Meal
DESCRIPTION:Digest: Lingering After a Meal\nWatercolor paintings by Laurie Caird\nExhibition Details\nDates: Wednesday\, May 20\, 2026 – Tuesday\, July 14\, 2026 \nOpen Hours:\nMonday – Thursday: 7:00 AM – 3:30 PM\nFriday: 7:00 AM – 5:00 PM\nSaturday – Sunday: 7:30 AM – 5:00 PM \nArtist Reception\nDate: Friday\, June 5\, 2026\nTime: 5:30 – 8:00 PM\nRaffle drawing at 7:30 PM \nRSVP link for the Artist reception \nLocation: Pinhole Coffee\, 231 Cortland Avenue\, San Francisco\, CA 94110 \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nAbout the Exhibition\nGathering to share a meal connects us to our communities in a ritual that offers the opportunity to pause\, particularly after a very satisfying meal and uplifting camaraderie\, and appreciate the effort and care demonstrated in every element. Digest is dedicated to every person and resource involved in the highly curated experience of dining – those who farmed and harvested\, chopped and simmered\, selected the perfect plate; the seeds\, the water\, the earth. \nPainting the post-meal tablescape extends the invitation to mindfully absorb the experience – the company\, the conversation\, the sense memories – everything that made this meal one to savor long after the dishes have been washed. \nLaurie Caird is an artist based in Oakland. Her work explores our relationship to time\, celebrating the Japanese concept of ichigo ichie – cherishing the moment at hand\, as it will never be replicated – and themes of connection to nature\, humanity\, and joy through food. \nCalendar – Bernal Heights and Beyond\nBernal ConnectMike Doherty serves as Chief Experience Officer at Greening Projects\, a nonprofit organization dedicated to transforming underutilized urban spaces into vibrant green areas
