SUMMARY:Hardy Hanson: IN THE SPRING
DESCRIPTION:Hardy Hanson: IN THE SPRING\nOpening reception: January 23\, 5-7 p.m.\nOn view through March 31\, 2026\, at Michelle Thomas Fine Art Gallery + Studio \nHardy Hanson worked passionately and prolifically for 55 years\, painting\, sculpting\, printmaking\, and teaching art\, often simultaneously. He found a positive synergism working on all at once\, and many pieces took several years to complete. This “grasshopper” approach allowed for one medium to influence another\, resolving artistic dilemmas. \nDuring the 1970s\, Hanson focused primarily on creating detailed sculptural works using repeated\, unorthodox materials. Small yet powerful\, these sculptures produce simultaneous feelings of fascination and aversion\, an uneasy tension. Hardy said he chose “micro elements to address macro themes\,” manipulating order to reveal the underlying chaos and darker side of human nature. \nHis sly titles were intellectual keys to engaging and expanding viewers’ perceptions. Towards the end of his life\, Hardy explored more existential questions\, shifting his focus from the world around him to the world within. His lifelong interest in the interactions of painted fragments culminated in this series of beautiful paintings. \nDense drifts of pointillist dots create illusory volumes of light and space\, a visual ebb and flow\, expressing the mysterious connection we have with our infinite cosmos. He titled these paintings his “Meditations” series. \nABOUT THE ARTIST: HARDY HANSON\nFebruary 16\, 1935–January 25\, 2012 \nHardy Hanson was born and raised in Long Beach\, California\, and was educated at Long Beach City College\, University of California\, Los Angeles\, and Yale University\, where he studied under Josef Albers. He went on to teach at San Fernando Valley Junior College\, California State University\, Northridge\, UCLA\, University of Southern California\, and finally\, as Professor of Art Emeritus at Porter College\, University of California\, Santa Cruz\, for 29 years. He was a core member of the UCSC Art Department. \nWhen not in his studio\, Hanson’s artistic expression took its most powerful and enduring form in the four-acre terraced garden surrounding the home he and his wife\, Ruth\, built in Santa Cruz in 1971. He sculpted the hillsides with re-purposed broken concrete\, creating terraced orchards\, vegetable and rose gardens\, no less intricate than his meticulous art. The daily rhythms of nature suited his artistic habits. \nHanson’s work is included in the following permanent collections: \nColorado Springs Fine Art Center\nCrocker Art Museum\, Sacramento\nFresno Art Museum\nHirshhorn Museum\, Washington\, D.C.\nLong Beach Museum of Art\nLos Angeles County Museum of Art\nPalm Springs Desert Museum\, California\nThe Metropolitan Museum of Art\, New York\nMilwaukee Art Center\nNational Gallery of Australia\nSanta Barbara Museum of Art\nSan Diego Museum of Art \nCalendar – Bernal Heights and Beyond\nDISTANT EXISTENCE: Paintings by Samuel Kampelman Exhibition\nInclusions Gallery: Dreams in the City – Beata Kaczmarek\nBernal ConnectMike Doherty serves as Chief Experience Officer at Greening Projects\, a nonprofit organization dedicated to transforming underutilized urban spaces into vibrant green areas

SUMMARY:Lágrimas del Valle Tequila Tasting @ SF Tequila Shop
DESCRIPTION:A Journey Through the Ranch: Lágrimas del Valle Tasting\nWhere: SF Tequila Shop \nWhen: Friday\, Feb 27 | 5:00 PM – 7:30 PM \nElevate your Friday evening with a pour of something truly rare. Join us for an exclusive tasting of Lágrimas del Valle\, a tequila that treats agave like fine wine. \nMost tequilas are a blend of harvests\, but Lágrimas is Vintage-Dated and sourced from a “Rancho Unico” (Single Ranch). This means every sip captures the specific soil\, weather\, and spirit of a single plot of land in Jalisco. \nWhy You Can’t Miss This:\nThe Pedigree: Produced in collaboration with the legendary Rosales family at the Cascahuín distillery (NOM 1123)—gold standard names for tequila purists. \nThe Terroir: Experience how “Rancho Unico” production creates distinct flavor profiles that vary from harvest to harvest. \nThe Craft: Learn the stories behind the brand while sampling expressions that represent the pinnacle of traditional brick-oven cooking and tahona milling. \nAdmission: Complimentary / Open to the public (21+) \n\nAbout SF Tequila Shop: San Francisco’s Agave Sanctuary\nLocated in the heart of the Bernal Heights neighborhood\, SF Tequila Shop is more than just a local bottle shop—it is a “temple of agave” and a premier destination for spirits enthusiasts across Northern California. \nThe Story\nThe shop is a third-generation family legacy. The story began with Nirmal Singh Malhi\, who immigrated to California in the 1980s. After years of working the fields in the Central Valley\, the family opened their first liquor store in Modesto in 1993. Over the decades\, the focus shifted toward a deep specialization in agave spirits. Today\, the third generation\, led by Amandip “Moose” Malhi and Scott\, carries that tradition forward at their flagship location on Cortland Avenue. \nWhat Sets Them Apart\nMassive Selection: Boasting over 1\,000 different styles of agave spirits\, it is widely considered to have the largest selection in San Francisco. \nThe “Agave Universe”: While Tequila is the star\, the shop specializes in the full spectrum of Mexican spirits\, including Mezcal\, Bacanora\, Raicilla\, and Sotol\, as well as Mexican wines and rums. \nA “Craft Beer Gem”: Surprisingly\, the shop is also a top-tier destination for craft beer lovers\, stocking rare and sought-after releases from local favorites like Cellarmaker\, Barebottle\, and Alvarado Street. \nExpert Curation: The staff is known for their deep technical knowledge and for prioritizing additive-free brands and traditional production methods (such as tahona milling and brick-oven cooking). \nCommunity & Culture\nSF Tequila Shop is a cornerstone of the Bernal Heights merchant corridor. From organizing the annual Tequila Crawl to hosting weekly educational tastings\, the shop focuses on moving agave spirits away from “college party” stereotypes and toward the respect typically reserved for fine whiskey or cognac. \nLocation: 801 Cortland Ave\, San Francisco\, CA 94110 \nSpecialties: Agave Spirits\, Mexican Wine\, Rare Craft Beer\, and Monthly Subscription Clubs. \nCalendar – Bernal Heights and Beyond\nBernal ConnectMike Doherty serves as Chief Experience Officer at Greening Projects\, a nonprofit organization dedicated to transforming underutilized urban spaces into vibrant green areas
